Old Man Winter...you can leave already!
Okay, so having grown up in the north I was accustomed to snow. In large amounts even. It wasn't uncommon to not see the grass from the time of the first snowfall until spring. I clearly remember softball season starting and being trapped playing the game indoors and batting off the machine in the cage...and feeling certain that those mounds of snow would never disappear. That was in my youth, you see. As an adult, I moved south. While I am not so far south as to avoid the cold of winter, snow is something that we have seen very little of. Until this year, that is. And I am no longer youthful enough to embrace it with joy. Nope, quite the opposite really. Not sure what the grand total of our snowfall for this season has been, but I would venture a guess that it is well over 50 inches. Now for some of you in the northwest, this may seem like a drop in the bucket. But not so in a state that is unprepared for it in every way. Even my kids have gone back and forth in their feelings about it. They have loved all the snow-days off of school. And we all agree that it is pretty. Everything shrouded in white, covering all the blemishes of winter, can be nothing but beautiful. And it certainly opens up a whole host of outdoor activities that help to stave off the boredom and stir-craziness of the long season. However, it makes driving treacherous (or impossible, depending on your vehicle) and simple tasks anything but. My boys have been braving the winds and cold as they have to ride in the bed of the 4 wheel drive camp truck. The cab is too small to seat everybody, so the boys ride outdoors from our house to the bottom of the lane. Yep, I think they are pretty much over that bit of fun and are longing for the day when the path will be clear enough for our poor van to make the climb home. Until that day, we will continue to haul wood, wear layers of clothing, and to shovel a porch that only gets covered again in a matter of days or hours. Oh, the joys of this most unusual southern winter!!!!
